Friday, Week 2

Jerry KnirkThere are lots of program opportunities for people of all ages here at Calumet. One of the fun things for the little ones in the campground or for little ones who live within a short distance from Calumet is the Calumet Day Camp. The day camp has been directed by Becci Barnett for many years and there are awesome counselors who go through an in depth training period along with the whole Resident Camp Staff. Campers ages 6 to 12 arrive to camp each morning and head home before suppertime. While they're here there are tons of things to do. The kids learn how to swim, read stories, have snack time, do arts and crafts projects, go for short hikes, enjoy a delicious lunch -- and the list goes on and on. Each week, Calumet alum and long time Family Camper Jerry Knirk visits with the camp and talks about the vegetable garden that is right next to the Day Camp Tent. Jerry does a great job with this garden, and loves to help kids and adults learn about growing produce, how to start a garden, and that good food doesn't grow in a grocery store! Check out this little clip -- and thanks Jerry!!

Beach BBQCalumet has great food -- great food for breakfast, for lunch, and for supper. People from all over can come (and do come) to enjoy a meal in good old Calumet fashion. One cool thing during the summer is Calumet's Beach BBQ. Families from the campground, Family and Adult Camp staff, and Resident Camp staff members on day offmake their way to the beach for a noon-time meal. The little ones step out of the lake and grab their towel before heading up to the BBQ line. Moms and dads finish whatever chapter of the summer beach read and order their chicken sandwich. Some people choose to eat lunch while sitting on their towel in the sunshine. Most, though, gather at the picnic tables under the shady pines. Great conversation, sharing , and laughter take over. The Beach BBQ is one of the great things about Calumet.

Free PeriodEach day at Calumet, we have FREE period. During this roughly one hour hunk of time, campers get to try something new or different as compared to their other three activity periods which they go to every day for the whole week. Maybe they'll swim on Monday, but go to ARts and Crafts on Tuesday, and then canoeing on Wednesday. FREE period gives the camper a shot at trying a new thing without committing to the activity all week long. Here are just some of the things campers do during the daily FREE period.

Cre8tivityWide Games at Calumet are among the most memorable things about a camper's experience here. The cabin group works together to achieve a common goal doing activities that require all kinds of different talents. Sometimes it's musical, sometimes it's something very active, sometimes it's being able to answer a tough question or problem solve. This is one of the times when staff and campers get to be pretty creative. Here are some highlights of one of Calumet's Wide Games. The campers love it and the counselors are soooooo good at making it all happen! If you like what you see, please share it with your friends through an email or by posting it on your Facebook page. Help spread the word about how awesome Calumet is for kids and young adults.

Monday Week 2

ZackIt's a beautiful day here at Camp Calumet. The kids who are brand new this week have settled in nicely. The campers who have been here since last week have done a wonderful job at welcoming their new friends. There are lots of surprises here at camp. Check out this video and see something that surprised me! You'll also meet some campers in Girls Cabin One, Zack the maintenance guy, and some of the L&S crew -- without whom we'd be in tough shape. L&S does so much to keep camp running smoothly. What a crew!
